Spring is here!!

Well it is definitely here and I am such a happy bunny...not least because we have wild bunnies hopping all over the place, deer grazing in the field below our house, buzzards circling overhead and little red squirrels bounding about. Last week was great and I went out for lots of walks and saw so much of it. I was starting to flag with the whole exercise thing...who says a bride should diet and get as skinny as she can for her big day? I feel the pressure but have to admit that I was really starting to find any opportunity not to go to the exercise classes, to see my curvaceous jiggling form in the evil mirrors in front of me but walking about like this is something I can do. Over three walks last week I must have walked between 10 and 12 miles, not much for some people but it was a good start for me and I feel great about it. Two of the walks were with munchkin #2 school as part of a week long outdoor learning thing they do four times a year. Seeing all of these things, reminding myself of the Spring wines I can now actually make now the dandelions are out in force as is the gorse and the sun is out so I can pick them... shall we say there is a feel good factor going on here.
My sweetpeas are sprouting and some shoots are nearly 2cm tall so that sort of wedding planning is going well and as I sit here and type my hair is in a twiddly updo as I have tried a new 'do' that might be the one for the wedding. The blueberry liqueur has been bottled and the two bottles are nestled in a cool dark part of the kitchen along with the others so all in all I would have to say that wedding planning is going well too.
If I sound bouncy and upbeat it's because I am...well at least for now! I may have a few posts quite close together because I want to share some the things that are going on right now. A couple of days ago, feeling fabulous about the walks with the school, I dragged my lovely OH along for a walk. We took JR and the furry assassin decided to tag along as we walked took photos and generally admired the views and the stunning flora and fauna that we saw. I am including some pictures that I took because I feel a need to share this stunning place with you.

Trying to take a decent photo of the stream!

He has to drink every bit of water we find on our walks

The furry assassin likes to monitor our wandering

forget-me-nots growing by the side of the path
Little red squirrel standing very still 20ft away from us...

So this is what we see when we go for a walk around here and after nearly two years I am almost...almost getting used to it.

Not so dull

You know, before I moved up to Scotland I cannot honestly tell you how I pictured it except as mostly colourless with dull greens and browns except for the heather but I couldn't think that would change the landscape much. There is no specific reason for me to think this only that people had often told me that it is cold, rainy and nothing really grows here. All I can say is that the people who said these things clearly haven't ever been here. This time of year there are daffodils which have been planted but the yellow of these is a pale echo of the deeply golden gorse, or 'whin' as it is usually known up here. It is everywhere and all of those seemingly dull brown and green hedges are now bursting with clusters of flowers and the hedges have become beautiful, not just functional things. What I did not expect is for it to smell a lot like coconut but the next sunny morning I am not busy I will be out there collecting some to make gorse wine. My wine making is still going well. I have racked off the fruit juice wines and the mead, although the mead is still fermenting the fruit juice wines should be ready to bottle this weekend. When I mentioned to the ladies at craft and chatter about my plans for the gorse they looked at each other puzzled until one said, "oh, the whins!" at which point they all knew the flowers I meant and they reminisced about their mothers and grannies drying the washing over the whins when the ladies themselves were children and in some cases that was only thirty years ago.
One thing that happened in the Easter holidays is that Fat Pigeon returned, in that a very fat pigeon returned to the farm and sat on the gate watching me in the mornings but soon it showed it's true colours by doing slightly different things; he is, in fact, Fat Imposter Pigeon. There are lots of large brown rabbits scampering all over the place which will make our furry assassin very happy. I have been informed by the cat that she is not at all happy that JR has been mentioned here many times but she has been mostly ignored so here is a picture of her.

JR's sleeping habits have returned to normal but I do wonder if he will start sleeping in every school holiday now. He has assumed his current preferred working position in the kitchen which is in his bed in the corner. His little toffee coloured eyebrows twitch as I type.

Now a couple of weeks ago I told you about my long neglected quilt that I made for munchkin #1 well very shortly after munchkin #2 decided he also wanted a quilt so I got a single duvet set with superheroes on and set about turning it into a TV quilt for him. After opening the seams of the duvet case and cutting off the poppers I made a 'sandwich' with the wadding in the middle and tacked it all together before hand sewing around all of the comic books, being sure the sew through all three layers. This was the 'quilting' bit. I measured the sides so I would know how much binding I would need, opened out all of the seams for the pillow case and cut it into strips 2 1/2' wide before sewing them all together to make one long strip. After trimming the quilted section I used the sewing machine to attach the binding. I was a bit surprised by the result and he loves his new TV quilt.

mitred corner!! Loving these :D

Wedding planning continues and seems to be going well which is good because the time is moving in some sort of fast forward way. I have been panicking a bit about my choice of shawl pattern and have changed my mind on that a few times now so to distract myself and calm my knitting thoughts I have started another pair of socks; let's call it a cooling off period to see if I still like the most recently chosen pattern.

I will be heading out for a walk with JR now to take another look at those whins...

Road Trip

So quick post as I just had to tell you about this; we all decided to jump in the car and head to the west coast of Scotland for the day and check out the scenery. That's right. Road trip!!! We kept stopping to take photos of the beautiful scenery. There was a stunning gorge with waterfalls, hills with snow patches, highland cows, and lost looking houses next to lochs.

We stopped in Ullapool and had a delicious meal in a restaurant with the most relaxed atmosphere and fabulous sea food going. If you are ever in the area I would suggest you try out the Seaforth Inn http://www.theseaforth.com It is right by the harbour and the boats were traditional and it all looked picture perfect. I bought a cute candle in pretty colours from a shop Made in Ullapool which was made locally as part of an enterprise to support vulnerable adults in the work place http://www.madeinullapool.com

We are going to do the North Coast 500 drive in the summer with some friends so we get to see more of this stunning scenery.

At times it has been a bit odd since moving up here because it is so very, very different from life in Kent but who wouldn't want to wake up to these clear skies and be able to take a drive, see beautiful things, eat fresh sea food and be home in time for dinner? Happy Monday to you all.

Quilting and Easter

What a hectic and somewhat short week! I went a little bit crazy and finished that little quilt, my first ever (drumroll, please!)...ta da!!

the top (need practice!)

neat (ish) corners
the bottom (see those free motion quilted squiggles?!?)

This led to a crazy moment seeing as I had to take my shiny new car, okay so not shiny on account of all the mud splattered all over it, but still quite new car to the dealership for a safety recall (all is now safe) and saw me spending a great deal of time and a fair bit of money in a local quilting shop. I fully support my local shops but I have to be honest and say that the quilt I am planning next could have been made with less agony to my bank account! The tutorials from the Missouri Star quilt Company in America have been very useful and I have decided to make more quilts if only to perfect my new found skills. Who am I kidding? I doubt skill is a word that should be used to describe my quilting yet, anyway. Because I plan to make a quilt for each of the beds in the house (and eventually the sofa bed but let's walk before running, eh?) it seemed sensible to start with the single bed so a riot of pink happened in the fabric shop. One fabric was so gorgeous though that I could not stand to see it cut up into strips for a jelly roll and I chose that for the backing; it's called 16th Century Selfie, I kid you not and there is a link to it here: http://amzn.to/1ZPGkN4

In amongst all of this madness has been the Easter holidays with munchkins running about, an egg hunt all over the farm and trips out. JR has left his much loved post by my ankle as all the running about has tired him out so he has taken to laying in bed, my bed not his, until after 9am! I really don't know how he will cope after the school holidays!! My lovely OH has started going to the local photography club and got roped into being a model for them due to his bushy beard. I hasten to add that he had to grow and keep the beard after meeting me as smooching led to nasty stubble rash (too much information perhaps but necessary to establish his non-hipster credentials). The garden is waking up properly now so I have been outside tending to all of the plants in pots that are being grown for the wedding. It's all happening. I had better go and get on with things as the munchkins are in need of my home made pancakes for second breakfast,
